Brand strategy and positioning

Positioning first. Once the company has decided what it is and who it is for, the brand, the deck and the website all have something to carry.

What it decides

A brand strategy consultant should leave you with decisions, not a mood board. These are the four we settle.

Position
Who the company is for first, what it replaces, why it wins and what it is choosing not to do.
Message
How that position is said: in one line, in a paragraph, on the website, in the deck and in a sales conversation.
Name
Where a name is needed, or no longer fits the company the business has become.
Identity
A brief for the identity, or the identity itself, built to carry the position rather than decorate it.

Why it comes before a raise

An investor meets the brand before they meet the founders: on the website, in the deck, in the one line someone used to introduce you.

If those say slightly different things, the first meeting starts with a question about what the company is. Settling the position first means every one of those surfaces answers it the same way. Positioning comes before the deck sets out the order we work in.

Brands we have positioned

Market research, Tokyo, Japan

CarterJMRN

CarterJMRN’s website was dated and confusing, and lacked a central message. A firm that researches positioning for its clients had never done the same work for itself.

Metals recycling, UK and Africa

Romco Metals

Romco needed to be understood by investors and buyers as more than a recycler: a supplier of the metals the energy transition depends on.
